The earth is undeniably rich in minerals and for so many years it has become beneficial to human beings ever since they know how to mine it. Precious minerals like gold, bronze and diamonds are among the most precious and most useful over the years.

These precious minerals don’t reproduce and there would really come a time that all of them would vanish and when that time comes, where in the world are going to get it?

Well, as early as this time, the miners of the earth are having plans of pursuing the mining industry outside the universe. Yes, you’re reading it right, they are pursuing it to the outer space. This is also one way of preserving what’s left here on earth.

It was once presented on sci-fi films and now it’s becoming a reality. These expensive project is being backed up by famous billionaires such as filmmaker James Cameron and Google executives Larry Page and Eric Schmidt. They are very willing to monitor nearby asteroids and if they would find out that it contains precious metals, they will be sending miners to dig it out. Approximately $25 billion to $50 billion worth of metals per 100-foot-long asteroid are expected to be extracted.

These asteroids has a lot of things to offer. They even have water supplies that can be broken down in space to form liquid states of oxygen and hydrogen to be used as rocket fuel. Operations can sustain if that’s the case.

This idea of mining outer space still needs a lot of safety studies and precautions before a human being could be sent to work. It would entail billions of money but rich people won’t mind spending that much because of the feasibility of getting more in return.

If before these businessmen are okay with venturing real estate businesses like acquiring beach properties for sale in the Philippines or perhaps keep themselves busy looking for retirement homes in the Philippines, now they are wide awake once more because the outer space has far more a lot of things to offer.

Robots has become part of the society for decades but it was never achieved that a robot can controlled by the mind. Only in sci-fi movies we can witness these things but in reality, these robots are pre-programmed and commands are done with physical interactions.

Now is the time that these robots has come to the era of mind control. In Switzerland, a group researchers have now enabled a partially paralysed person to control a robot with the use of his mind alone and it is from a distance of 100Km (62 miles).

The recipient of the experiment is Mr Mark-Andre Duc. He lost control of his his fingers and legs because of an accident. The experiment happened last Tuesday and the team made him control the 62 mile distant robot. He just imagined moving his fingers left and right and amazingly, the robot responded to his commands and moved its finger accordingly.

As of the moment, the team wanted to focus on inventing that special wheelchair wherein its movements can be controlled by its passenger. In the future, they are aiming to develop brain controlled mechanised prosthetics for lost arms, legs or hands. In a way, a person who lost a part of his body could somehow bring back the sensations through having the robotic artificial replacements.

This new innovation could somehow give a chance to those people who lost their hope to live a normal life again. Those who lost their legs can still make use of their arms to look for jobs online. One differently-abled businessman shared that he is earning through selling beach properties for sale in the Philippines online. His legs were amputated 5 years ago because of an accident. He also deals retirement homes in the Philippines and his earning a lot to suffice his medical needs. If such innovation will push through, it would be of great help.

Have you ever tried those moments when you’re too tired to get up from your seat to plug your alarming laptop because it’s already running out of battery? Too tired to stand because you’re too busy in your recent addiction with mail order bride russian hobby?

Then worry no more because this latest invention is truly the thing you’ve been waiting for. The WiTricity Corporation in Watertown, Massachusetts has developed something that could help out it charging your gadgets wirelessly.

WiTricity’s technology was developed by Marin Soljacic, a physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and colleagues. Basically, there is this primary magnetic coil that would be plugged somewhere in your place that would generate oscillating magnetic fields. Then your gadget/s will have this secondary magnetic coil embedded in their hardware that would join in a continuous magnetic field, and enough resonance results to induce an electrical charge for needy batteries.

In the near future, electric cars could somehow embrace this kind of technology and won’t be stopping in any charging stations anymore.

“WiTricity has signed a technology transfer and licensing agreement with MediaTek, a semiconductor company in Taiwan, to collaborate on systems for wireless charging of mobile handsets, tablet computers, game controllers and other devices,” says Eric Giler, the company’s CEO.

With this technology, you can now enjoy that much time with your search with russian girls seeking men without being bothered of standing up to charge your laptop.

This has been the generation of online gaming. Kids usually play games outside or in the park and when they become young men they stop playing and do some other things. Games of this generation don’t stop on kids especially if we’re talking about online games. It lures teenage boys and even adults are addicted to it. Most of these online games are battle or war games wherein one needs to kill the villains or the opposing virtual group using virtual weapons. For online gamers killing is winning and it doesn’t sound good for those who are not used it.

There has been several studies conducted by a lot of concerned researchers on how these violent games can affect the gamers themselves. Neurological as well as behavioral changes have been pointed out several times as its worst effects that the controversy has even reached the Supreme Court last year.

The Indiana University School of Medicine researchers presented a study just recently showing that there has been significant changes in the region of the brain associated with cognitive function and emotional control to those young men who played violent video games, compared to playing games at http://www.partypoker.it, in just a span of 1 week.

“For the first time, we have found that a sample of randomly assigned young adults showed less activation in certain frontal brain regions following a week of playing violent video games at home,” says Yang Wang, M.D., assistant research professor in the IU Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences. “The affected brain regions are important for controlling emotion and aggressive behavior.”

The researchers gathered 28 gamers and half of them were randomly chosen to play a shooting video game for 10 hours at home for one week and refrain from doing such for another week. All of the 28 recipients underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analysis at the beginning of the study, with follow-up exams at first and second weeks. The fMRI comes along with emotional interference task and cognitive inhibition counting task.

After a week of playing the violent shooting games, the 14 recipients showed less activation both in the emotional and cognitive tasks. After another week of not playing the game, tests were again taken and the results were now as close to the results of the controlled group who didn’t play violent games for the entire 2 weeks.

“These findings indicate that violent video game play has a long-term effect on brain functioning,” Dr. Wang said. “These effects may translate into behavioral changes over longer periods of game play.”

This is something that everyone should think over. These violent online games really affects the brain functioning of the gamer and could eventually lead to behavioral changes in the future. The gamers should be aware of these things for them to realize that what they’re frequently doing may harm them in the long run.

Receding hairlines is basically one of the most stressful moments that an adult would be dealing with but the more you’re stressed about it, it worsens. Practically because stress plays a great role in graying of hair or hair loss. For that reason alone, there is no doubt that stress management would be subject to a lot of studies in the past years. “Stress is really inevitable especially when your job calls for it,” says Patric Marx, an entrepreneur in early 30′s who’s affiliated to boats for sale in Philippines. He’s always travelling to meet his clients and usually sleep late to finish all his paper works and his friends noticed his receding hair line lately.

These hair loss effect has been managed by separated studies which resulted to numerous hair restoration remedies which includes but are not limited to hair oils, scalp nourishment creams, medications such as minoxidil and a lot more. However, these things, up to this time, showed less effectiveness.

Earlier this year, a group of researchers from UCLA and the Veterans Administration has been studying stress and it’s effects on the gastrointestinal activity accidentally found a certain chemical compound that induces hair growth by blocking a stress-related hormone associated with hair loss.

CRF a.k.a corticotrophin-releasing factor is a stress hormone found in the human skin along with its receptors and other peptides controlling the receptors that anytime would be triggered as humans experience stress. The researchers then genetically modified some mice to overly produce this hormones. As it age, they lose hair and eventually become bald on their backs.

The researchers also developed another peptide that could block the activity of CRF called astressin-B. The genetically modified mice where then injected with astressin-B to observe how its CRF-blocking ability affected gastrointestinal tract function, which is really the first aim of the study. A single shot didn’t show any effects so they continued the process up to the 5th day and left the specimen for 3 months together with the genetically unaltered mice.

As to their astonishment, they could no longer distinguish which ones were injected with astressin-B because all of them look exactly alike. In short, the bald mice have regrown their hair.

“When we analyzed the identification number of the mice that had grown hair we found that, indeed, the astressin-B peptide was responsible for the remarkable hair growth in the bald mice,” says Million Mulugeta, one of the researchers.

“This is a comparatively long time, considering that mice’s life span is less than two years,” Mulugeta added.

It showed remarkable effects on mice and it may also do the same to humans. Some of the bald mice were also treated with minoxidil and showed minimal effects as it does to human beings.

The field of Orthopedics has reached far beyond our expectations. Experts of the field has been constantly studying and discovering new ways to provide cure and rehabilitation to all sorts of bone problems. Just like any other parts of the body, our skeletal system plays a very important role. It serves as our most basic foundation and any ailment would really lead to serious problems.

Unfortunately, bones can’t grow far beyond its normal length nor regenerate whenever it gets broken. However, accidents are inevitable and a bone repair would always be necessary. Artificial bones are already out in the market and can readily be used for those who need it but still it remains artificial and can never replace what has been naturally there. It usually made of prosthesis attached in a metal piece and can never be hidden under your skin.

With constant research and study, Orthopedic scientists were able to discover a device that can initiate bone tissue growth. It is a 3D printer that can be used to create bone-like materials. The engineers of the team said that the substance can be added to a damaged natural bone where it acts as a scaffold for new cells to grow.

The team together with Prof Susmita Bose has been working on the project for nearly 4 years now and they’re proud to reveal the positive results they obtained from using immature fetal bone cells in the laboratory. It showed new bone cells started growing over the scaffold within the first week of it being attached.

To picture things out clearly, the researchers discovered a new way to double the strength of the main ceramic powder – calcium phosphate – by adding silica and zinc oxide. Then they customized a 3D printer to shape the needed scaffolds. The bone tissues will eventually growth over the scaffolds as the latter dissolves in the long run.

“The way I envision it is that 10 to 20 years down the line, physicians and surgeons should be able to use these bone scaffolds along with some bone growth factors, whether it is for jaw bone fixation or spinal fusion fixation,” Dr. Bose said.

Chris Bech, a local who just recently broke his long arm while fixing his roof developed a strong hope that he could have his long arm fixed like nothing happened. More and more orthopedic patients will benefit the discovery and who knows, aside from Chris Bech, poliomyelitis victims can have normal bones again.

The world also witnessed how the Japanese managed the disaster and how fast they were able to get and move on with their lives. They are born hardworking and disciplined people and experiencing such disaster will not turn then down and live a miserable life. Instead, the disaster experienced will be used as a basis of inventing things for future use.

That’s how “Noah” came into reality. It’s their modern version of Noah’s Ark. A vessel that has long been popular for millions of people to have saved lives during a great flood. It wouldn’t be practical these days to park a huge vessel like the old Noah’s ark, that’s why Shoji Tanaka, the president of Cosmo Power, the company which manufactured the vessel, see to it that it will just fit in an average home.

At first he designed it like the ark but he realized it will capsize at strong winds. Tanaka then redesigned it into a perfect sphere made of enhanced fiberglass with a bright yellow color. It is a mini shelter that could house 4 adults and has survived many crash tests. The survival capsule has a small lookout window and breathing holes on topIt looks like a giant tennis ball.

“This is the only shelter that guarantees protection from any natural disaster,” said president Tanaka. His company already sold 600 capsules for for about $4,000 each.

Say for example breathing or respiration. It is a bodily process of of taking in oxygen from inhaled air and releasing carbon dioxide by exhalation. Just try putting your palm near your nose and breath out, can you feel the air pressing against your palm? Energy can therefore be generated if piezoelectric effect would be put into consideration. Piezoelectricity means electricity resulting from pressure. The very principle applied in igniting those gas grills by push buttons.

All these things along with the utilization of nanotechnology, Engineering Professor Xudong Wang, postdoctoral Researcher Chengliang Sun and graduate student Jian Shi was able to come up with an awesome energy source. Their team engineered Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) to generate sufficient electrical energy from respiration to operate small electronic devices.

“We calculated that if we could make this material thin enough, small vibrations could produce a microwatt of electrical energy that could be useful for sensors or other devices implanted in the face,” Wang said.

All the principles are already there and the team just have to make the materials as thin as possible while preserving its piezoelectric properties.

What they’ve discovered could make way of the development of mini biomedical devices such glucose monitors or pacemaker battery charger. Our body got plenty of energy wastes like blood flow, motion, heat, respiration, etc. which offers a consistent source of power that could somehow be recycled to produce energy for a biomedical devices.

It has been discovered that the saliva of Vampire Bats and Malaysian pit vipers contains anti-coagulating enzymes that could be life threatening to their prey. When the bat bites a rat, it will introduce the deadly venom causing massive hemorrhage to it.

On the other, this anti-clotting capability of the enzyme found in bat’s saliva could be of great help in treating CVA (Cerebrovascular Accident) patient or simply those people suffering stroke. Strokes occur when blood flow to a region of the brain is obstructed or compromised due to formation of clots. Lack of oxygen and glucose flowing to the brain leads to death of brain cells. If enough time lapses without treatment, brain damage often results in impairment in speech, movement and memory as well.

A clinical testing would conducted for the potency of the drug. It is lead by Dr. David Chiu, a neurologist and medical director of the Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center at the Methodist Neurologic Institute in Houston. “These chemicals are very powerful and very complex, and the animals use them to survive. We are using them to help people survive strokes and lessen the damage they do,” Dr. Chiu said.

The drug that would be producing would be used for emergency cases. The sooner the patient takes the anti-coagulant, the better the prognosis the patient can have.

The drug’s potency would be the hope of the millions of stroke patients in the world.

A lot of people these days prefer cremation in burying their dead love ones so that they can still bring home the ashes. Moreover, there is no need for them to acquire expensive properties in memorial parks that are usually located far away from the residential lots.

However, cremation is a burning process and the its fumes released into the atmosphere is not at all environment friendly. Those people who has been protecting nature in their entire life don’t have to stop their advocacy during the time of their burial.

The process of cremation can still be achieved flame less. They call it “resomation”. It is a process that uses high-temperature water and chemical treatment that dissolves mortal remains. Resomation is similar to cremation only that it doesn’t produce the environmentally harmful chemical emissions. The process has been introduced by a Scotland firm headed by Sandy Sullivan.

In resomation the corpse is placed in a capsule-like chamber filled with water and potassium hydroxide. The latter is a highly alkaline chemical that’s why the other name is alkaline hydrolysis. This will then be heated and after a couple of hours, all that is left of the body is the skeletal part. It would then be powdered and returned to the family. The water which contains the dissolved remains will then be returned to the standard municipal water treatment facilities and into the hydrological cycle.
