What Good Bacterias can do to your Brain

Youve heard of good bacteria and bad bacteria. And probably you’ve heard of how they either benefit you, or destruct you. But lets talk about a type of bacteria that is friendly to your stomach and bosses your brain.

A  study examined mice fed with broth fortified with a type of bacteria called Lactobacillus rhamnosus. Scientist noticed an influence in the mice’s behaviour. Mice normally stay close to the walls but upon consuming the bacterium, they have spent more time in open space, an indication that the mice are less anxious than usual. Scientist have even conducted a stress test, forcing mice to swim in a water tank , and the study shows that they have less stress hormones than the ones they fed with broth without bacterium.

The research team that was led by John Bienenstock of McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, and John Cryan of the University College Cork in Ireland have gone into the mice’s brain to examine levels of the GABA receptor, a class of  receptor that responds to the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) which is an important brain chemical messenger. Mice’s  fed with broth containing bacterium had higher levels of the receptor , which causes an influence in the mice’s behaviour.

However , researchers are still unsure as to whether it will have the same effect on  humans as drugs and products with probiotics give little evidence that affect people’s emotion. But still.. I think a cup of  yogurt is too yummy for words and is stress- relieving.
